COMELEC UNION SLAMS ATTEMPTED KILLING OF POLL OFFICER

Sunday, August 25, 2013

THE Commission on Elections Employees Union (Comelec-EU) condemned on Sunday the attempted assassination of Gapan, Nueva Ecija acting Election Officer Atty. Arsenio Reyes Jr. by motorcycle riding gunmen in San Leonardo, in the same province Friday.
“The Comelec-EU strongly condemns the attempted killing of Election Officer Reyes in Nueva Ecija,” said Comelec-EU National President Mac Ramirez.

He added, “We call on the authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators of this cowardly act to justice.”

Ramirez said this latest incident of violence against poll body officials and employees should prompt the Comelec leadership to institute additional measures to safeguard the lives of its employees.

“We reiterate that the dangers faced by Comelec employees in the frontlines are real. We maintain thus that our long standing call for wage increase and the grant of hazard pay are justified,” he said.

Reyes was driving his vehicle last August 23, 2013, when two men on board a motorcycle appeared from behind and fired several shots at him.

He sustained two gunshot wounds in the body but managed to survive the ordeal. Reyes previously served the National Police Commission and was reassigned to Comelec Nueva Ecija in January 2013. (FP/Sunnex)

VOTERS' PLEDGE

I am a Responsible and Principled Citizen.

I will educate myself and others about the issues at hand so that my vote is a meaningful and relevant exercise of my right of suffrage.

I pledge to vote for candidates who will abide by the duly constituted rules on campaigning because I understand that those who refuse to obey the law in the little things are not likely to obey the law in the more important things;

I pledge to vote for candidates who, by word and action, renounce violence, coercion, vote-buying, and corruption as means for getting elected;

I pledge to vote for the candidates who listen to their constituents and are responsive to the needs and aspirations of those they seek to represent;

I pledge to vote as my conscience dictates in all elections.

I make these promises freely and upon my honor.

(This Voter Pledge was read at the Unity Walk of 13 January 2013, by COMELEC Commissioner Elias R. Yusoph)
